First of all, I'm putting this here because the problem was caused by installing panther. Of course, I know it involves a peripheral. I hope this is the right place.
Since installing Panther, my Epson 2450 no longer works with firewire. The system profiler does not see the scanner and Vuescan also does not see the scanner. It does not seem to make any difference whether I turn the scanner on before or after the computer is booted up. I tried all the obvious combinations and (obviously) tried jiggling the cables, etc.
On the other hand, if I connect the scanner via USB (through a hub), it works fine. The system profiler sees the scanner and Vuescan drives it just as normal. Unfortunately, this is rather slow when scanning transparencies.
Firewire works fine when I connect my iPod. So it isn't firewire per se. Any suggestions?

Forget it. I figured out a fix through Apple's forums. The problem was Imagecapture. If you delete it from the library, Vuescan finds the scanner through firewire. (EDIT: To be exact, all you have to do is delete the epson driver from the imagecapture folder in the library).
The system profiler still fails to find the scanner (it says "G") but the driver finds it. Presumably, imagecapture was causing some kind of conflict. Oddly, it didn't cause that conflict in USB.
OK, I'm happy. But a bunch of people have this same problem with a variety of drivers including silverfast and epson's software. Why didn't Apple figure this out before releasing Panther?

Sorry, I was about to comment on your thread. I spent 5 hours working on a client's 3200. It died after auto-updating to 10.2.8. Panther install didn't fix the problem. Just stumbled across the solution myself. Drove me absolutely nuts. Glad you figured it out.

I tried deleting the scanner app from Image Capture, but that didn't work for me. What did work was to copy the EPSON TWAIN 5.ds file from the previous system (I did an archive/install) to the new system in the same location:
System/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources
Now when I use Image Capture or Photoshop, all I have to do is select the new TWAIN driver instead of the TWAIN 5 driver.

Isn't it interesting that the guy that writes the vuescan software can write software that works with the OS and Scanner better than the manufacturerers of the both the OS and the scanner?
I have a canon lide 30. Image caputure wouldn't work with it, and the software that canon shipped with it didn't work. Tried VueScan, and it worked no problems. Zero problems. Same thing with an old scsi scanner that I had been using. Vuescan automatically knew the thing was there, and used it. Why Canon can't do this is beyond me.
