I've just ordered a new G4 iBook to replace my current iBook. This is my first time upgrading OS X machines. I will be tranfering files from Jaguar (old machine) to Panther (new machine) I used to upgrade in OS 9 quite often, but don't know what all I need to do in X to make a successful transfer.

Other than my Home directory, etc, are there files I need to move? What about preferences & everything. I know they're handled differently in OS X & am not sure if I need to change anything.

What about mail? Is that a straight import, or do I need to do anything special, since it has been upgraded in Panther?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You can use .Mac's Backup app. It saves all your settings. I can't say if you get a copy if you don't have it and only signs up for a trial thought. Just make sure your username is the same on your target machine.
Firewire target mode could also be an option if you happend to have a FW cable around. If so, just use Carbon Copy Cloner (?) to move everything from your old iBook to the new. Then install Panther with archive and install.
Thought I bet there is plenty of ways to optain what your want, but if all you need is formost get the Mail settings and accounts, perhaps there is simplier methods...?
