using Safari 1.1 on my new panther installation i noticed that all website fonts (small and large) appear much much bolder and edges are smeary. These are not the standard and fixed-width fonts set in the preference panel nor does changing the overall font smoothing have anything to do with it (since problem exists with all font sizes). It looks pretty ugly. Any ideas?

can we get a comparison screenshot so we can see what you mean by 'too bold'?

Have you installed any extra fonts? Somehow, when I installed a Linkin Park font it screwed with Safari. Dragging it out of the fonts folder, problem solved. Try taking out all extra fonts.

This is a problem for me on my G4 1.42 tower...running Jaguar... Safari....all the fonts on a black/colored background with white type color just look smeared/fuzzy/blotchy and hard to read.

No problem on my ibook though with the same font sets exactly. My ibook displays the fonts clear without being blotchy.

How to solve? (without deleting all my fonts..I use them all)

No such problems here. Fonts look perfect and not bold on any color background. Some of you may have font issues or just don't like anti-aliasing.

I had the same problem with an iMac and G4 connected to a 17" Apple Display.

If you go to the System Preferences, choose Appearance and choose Standard - best for CRT under the Font Smoothing option.

It took care of the problem, for me.
