I never figured out in 10.2 how just to make the background any color I want.
If I take a picture and center it, I can then click on a color thing and pick any color I want on the color wheel or crayon picker....
But how can I do that?
Say I just feel like a simple yellow backgorund and it's not one of the 10 that apple put on Mac OS X.
also, are they more desktops hidden on the CD?
I feel that Mac OS 9 had better desktops with the bottles and the like.
Maybe I should grab those.

How do you paste a pixel in any color you want?
Do you use OS X or do you need another program?

1. Start any drawing/paint app.
2. create new drawing
3. select color you want, drop bucket of color onto canvas.
4. save file somewhere.
5. righ click desktop, navigate to folder with file, select.
6. lather, rinse, repeat

On a slightly related note, Pather (10.3) now allows plain background colors, you can use the color picker to set any color you want.

that's what I was getting at. I tried it in the store, but couldn't figure out how to select the color picker.
Sadly for me, this makes me excited to use panther.

Indeed. You can only pick from the couple of color swatches it offers.

<Edit: Sorry, I thought you meant the background of the finder windows, so this isn't really applicable.>
Go to the color picker that the finder gives you, then go to the spectrum picker (the fourth one from the right at the top of the color window). Then go to the "Palette" menu and you can have the option to choose from a file or to paste something in from memory. You can choose any color you want this way.

Here's a way to accomplish want you want.
Open Terminal. Don't worry as you won't be entering any text commands, if that might be of concern.
Click on Terminal/Window Settings.
Under Background Settings, Select "Use This Background Color", then select the color you want for the Desktop.
Now start Grab and capture the background of the Terminal window. Save the file.
Now start iPhoto and import the file you just saved. Export the file as a 64x64 jpg. (Size is arbitrary, most any size should work.)
Finally, right click (or control-click) on the Desktop and select "Change Desktop Background...". Select the file you exported in iPhoto.
Now you can select any solid color you want. I would suggest saving your favorite colors ahead of time. Then you can switch between them by right clicking(or control-clicking) on the Desktop. My method is a bit involved but at least you can do it with the programs included with Panther.
