Has anyone tested out how well Panther performs relative to Jaguar? I did a before an after comparison on both my machines. For the most part, I was relatively impressed. My tower averaged nearly a 27% decrease in time required to do the items tested, while my laptop averaged a 10% decrease. I'm still testing battery life on the laptop and will report later on that.

Items tested
Startup time
Shutdown time
Launch Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Safari, Photoshop (all separately)
In Safari - Loading CNN and Apple (separately)
Navigating HD from Dock to the PrintCenter under Utilities

Strange results - It took longer to boot the desktop under 10.3 (24%) but less on the laptop (23%). However, with MS apps, the tower performance was 36% faster in launching these apps, while the laptop was 25% slower.

Overall, I am very pleased so far. Still trying to figure out how most of the new features will help me, but I just LOVE Exposé

NOTE: This was an upgrade only. I did not have time to do a clean install, but will do so at a later date and will run the same comparisons.

I did a clean install of Panter on my new 12” - and the OS features like the save panels and such are a lot faster, but I have seen a slow not (not much) on app launchs. Funny, don’t know what that is all about.

Overall, I have to admit that Panther does feel "snappier". I have an original iBook clamshell (300Mhz) that used to run Jag. After Panther, general usage (menus, opening Safari, Mail, and Word X) is much smoother...defintely quicker response when clicking around. Granted, Expose is a bit jerky, but I can live with that.
All in all, Jobs just extended the life of my great little iBook for another year or so.

Very pleased with this update, indeed.

That's how I feel about my Quicksilver 867. I'd been thinking of upgrading to G5, but I think Panther just bought me some time (and saved me some money!).

performance boosts across the board. more in some areas, much less in others.

The new Finder window setup is very nice.

exposé is wonderful.

Improvement on my PB 12. Definite improvement on our iMac DVSE 400. Fast user switching while not animated on the iMac is very fast.

Well worth it.

It's awesome for me on my MDD 1 GHz

Xbench under 10.2.8: 94.75
Xbench under 10.3: 117.67

A 21% improvement!

I was surprised at the performance improvements. I figured that for my model (dual 867) that the only real improvement would be due to the shortened animations. But it is significantly noticeable. And not just in the Finder either. (Although the Finder is so improved that it alone is worth the upgrade price)

Performance is significantly better with Panther for me. The .app that is slower is System Preferences though. Clicking on a Pref Pane seems to be a real chore. It would be nice to be able to disable the effects in this app.

BTW, I have a 533 G4 Digital, 1.28 GB RAM, 80GB hard drive.

I was blown away by expose at the Apple store today... loved it immediately.

I couldn't tell how much 'faster' things were than Jag, but it does seem refined, and that = less time mucking about in annoying windows = awesome.

I have a 600 mhz snow ibook w/640MB RAM, and Panther has been like a 4-shot latte for my little machine!

Zippier, more responsive, and the new finder and expose make accessing my stuff more efficient.
