My Sony CDRW drive won't act as a boot disc. Is it possible to install panther from a disc image? Are there any alternatives to installing from the CD?

How have you come to have a CD drive that can't boot? Did you upgrade a CD-Rom drive with a CD-RW drive? I interested as to why an upgrade such as this if indeed that is what you've done renders the drive inoperable as a startup disk. As far as other options are concerned, none involved non CD installs, you could try mounting your computer in firewire target disk mode and installing onto it using someone else's computer that can boot of your CDs.

Yes, I have a B&W G3 that came with a 32x CDROM. Upgraded to a Sony 48x burner and can't boot from it. I can't burn from iTunes either

You can install the packages by hand in /System/Install/Packages. The big ones are the necessary ones. Once you have panther running, you can do the OSInstall.mpkg, but that won't run under Jaguar.

ACSA 10.4/10.3, ACTC 10.3, ACHDS 10.3

Ok, I installed all of the packages except the ones that are obviously unnecessary, and StartupDisk recognizes the 10.3 system folder, but it won't boot from it. Is there a particular order I should be installing in?

Your installation sequence is out of order. Perhaps you should install your old CD-ROM drive first, then install the OS.
