Hey, has anyone had any problems with Panther transposing letters in iChat, Mail, and Safari?

For instance, in Mail, when someone sends me a message saying:

"Auditions are being held on the University of Florida campus"

it shows up:

"Auditiams ore peing held am the Umiversity af Cemtrol Flarido conbus"

Messages in iChat do the same, and when I send an IM to someone, it appears in the conversation window garbled in the same way. The person I sent the message to sees it normally.

It also happens in Safari when I go to certain websites.

Anyone know what the deal is? I'm trying not to format/reinstall, as I've got gigs of project files on here that would take me forever to back-up.

I used the archive and install option in the installer.

One possibility is that if you disabled some of the duplicate fonts within Fontbook, those apps are trying to do the best they can with what ever.

I had rendering problems because of the above.

Suitcase can cause similar problems in 10.3, unless System Fonts are managed properly.

Thanks, guys. But I just made sure all my fonts were enabled in font book, and I'm still having the samw problems. Can you think of anything else that could be causing this?

when you installed, did you choose "US ENGLISH" or "DRUNKEN US ENGLISH"?

No, not a troll, thank you.

It's still happening, but I went and borrowed a friend's QPS Drive, so I'm just going to back everything up and try the fresh install. I've looked everywhere online and apparently I'm the only person in the world this is happening to.

That makes me special.

He's no troll. I have something similar. In Mail, Safari and iChat sometimes smaller text shows up all garbled. It looks like another language but I'm not sure. I guess it looks kinda lik Hebrew or something. Anyways, one of the first things I did on my clean install was install all of my nearly 1,000 fonts using Font Book. I guess that was my mistake. I have most of them disabled, only about 40 essential ones enabled. It seems something screwed it up. One work-around was to go into the apps that were having problems and changing their default font. If anyone ever comes up with a real fix, you let us know.
Thanks.

A similar problem was cured by clearing cache files with Cocktail. I don't remember if it was here or at Ars.

Do you have CocoAspell installed by any chance?

The old version caused all kinds of weird problems in mail for me. Extra spaces, double commas, quotes, etc.

I had the problem with the extra spaces, double commas etc. and I narrowed the problem down to a single cache file:
/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore

Trashing this file sorted the problem.

Although I also had CocoAspell installed I'm not sure if it was the cause of the problem. I suspected it may have been part of the problem, so I deleted it. The problem stayed until I trashed the offending cache file. I then re-installed the CocoAspell (before the new version came out) and everything worked fine.

back in the earlier days of OSX... when iCal first came-out... I was having odd type issues with the little dock icon. It would display the date correctly... but the month abbreviation was all f'ed-up. it was as if there were just 3 random letters... until I realized they WEREN'T random.

I cannot remember the EXACT offset, but it might have been one letter, so when I saw:

KVM above the date... it finally hit me... it's one letter off...! JUL for july... one letter-up from each is KVM.

I then went into my Suitcase sets and made-sure to disable any fonts that were the SAME as the core system fonts... such as Arial & Helvetica. BINGO! Problem solved!

I have no-idea if this would help YOUR situation, but I thought it couldn't hurt to share the anecdote. Good luck!

Suitcase might be the problem.

I've noticed that when I have suitcase on (with no fonts activated) my iCal numbers will move up in the dock icon about 12 pixels. if I quit iCal and Suitcase, then start iCal back up, the numbers return to the right place on the dock icon. hmmm.
