How does connect to server work in 10.3?

If I use Command K to connect to a server it mounts on my desktop just like it always did.

But if I use an alias that points to a folder on the server nothing mounts on my desktop, but I can browse the contents of the folder, WTF.

Is this the way it is suppose to work?
