Please help!

From a cold start, a Verify of my permissions looks like:
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/certs, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/classes.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/ppd, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups/printers.conf, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/etc/cups, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/var/spool/cups/tmp, should be 26, group is 0
Group differs on ./private/var/spool/cups, should be 26, group is 0

And I can print normally on my Epson 740. Cool!

But, If I Repair Permissions (all the above get reset from 0 to 26, what ever that means) and then I can no longer print. There is nothing in the print cue, no error dialog, nothing. Not so cool!

Then, if I shut down the computer and the printer, and then restart them both, the Permissions return (to 0) as initially noted, and printing is again routine.

I have zapped the PRAM and run DW and fsck -f with no success. Needless to say I remain confused. For sure that is the first time I have heard of Repairing Permissions actually doing harm.

I have repeated the above 3 times and each time the results were as noted.

And help/suggestions most sincerely appreciated.

I am also having trouble with printing in Panther, but with via IP ("host could not accept data file (32)" or something like that)

ditto here exactly - all of the above down to the same report as you. My printer is an Epson 380 wireless. I can't add the printer now - it is gone but not forgotten!

Exact same problem here. I ended up doing an archive and install again. That seemed to have fixed the problem. For now, I am staying away from repairing permissions until this is fixed.

Doh! I wish I would have read this before I repaired permissions. Granted, Disk Utility repaired plenty of other things as well, but my Epson 777 has the same problems as above.

If you wish to repair permissions and restore printing afterwards, the following worked for me:

sudo chgrp 0 -R /private/etc/cups
sudo chgrp 0 -R /private/var/spool/cups

Group 0 is wheel, and this is indeed the group Jaguar used for its cups files' permissions. How odd.

Double Doh! That would have saved me a ton of time. Upgraded then immediately repaired permissions like I always do. No issues until I tried to print. I thought my upgrade of 10.2.8 went awry so I ended up doing an archive and install.

One gent from MFI fixed the problem this way:

"Archive and Install did the trick! This time when the customize button came available I selected not to install any extra languages, fonts, or print drivers I didn't need including Gimp Print. Only the Epson 1 and Epson 2 packages. Then in the new printer setup utility, I configured my printers. Disk Utility repaired one cups file and that was it. Several prints and permission repairs later all is still well. Man it sure is nice having reverse order printing back for the old 740 workhorse."

But I can't help but wishing there were an easier way.
