Well I'm about to purchase Panther tomorrow for my dear PowerBook. So I'm going to do a clean install. The only problem I'm going to run into is backing all that crap up. My plan is: connect my mac through my freshly installed LAN to the Windoze box and copy over all my files to the PC. Question is: would It be possible in any way that windows/NTFS/samba ****s up any of my files ? And I'm having a hard time with those characters who are illegal in windows. Any way around that problem (other than archiving). And would compressing in ZIP-format (standard, not the Panther-variant) do any harm to my files ? (I don't think permissions is that important here because it's just a pile of PSD, html, etc you know the deal). And I don't really feel like backing everything up to CD.

thanks.

don't really know what windows would do to your files/permissions, etc.

if you have room, i would make a disc image of your drive then zip it, or just take the files of interest and zip them.

transfer them to the pc, transfer them back to the mac, unzip and try them out before wiping the mac clean

if that works, then go ahead.
file sharing to a pc is beyond me, although you should be able to scp or samba them if you know how. i would use scp (turn on remote login on the mac and use putty or a ssh/scp client on the pc) because i don't know jack about setting up samba on a pc.

also, for the really important stuff, back that up to a cd or 2 from the mac.
