OK, first a little background. Original TiBook 667, 768Mb RAM, Clean install of Panther...

So, I set up my tibook to synchronise automatically with .mac to give me a local iDisk. And I've been wondering why Pnather is so quick in some things (Booting, application launches etc) and why its so slow when I select the Open.. option in any application. If I do that in Word, Photoshop or Safari, I had to wait about 5 seconds for the Open.. dialog to come up.

Anyway, was browsing the forums and it suddenly occured to me to switch off my iDisk (i.e. turn off the local iDisk option) and now everything is brilliantly fast again.

I am in South Africa on an ADSL line and the speed is terrible which may be some part of the problem. Still for all of you who are on slower connections, this may help,

Cheers,

Rohan

I have seen this, but not consistently. Most recently when this happened, I know my iDisk was doing a big auto update of a bunch of new files I had just copied to my local iDisk. Don't know if these things were related or not.

On a somewhat related note, anyone know how often iDisk auto-syncing happens? I can't seem to find anywhere that it says, nor a pref to adjust it. Hasn't been a problem yet, but I'm on broadband 99% of the time. Just don't want it kicking on when I don't realize and I'm on dialup the 1% of the time that happens.

I'd like to know the answer to this one as well. If you select the manual sychronisation in Panther how do you then initiate a sychronisation? I can't find any option anywhere? It would be a good add in to iSync methinks.

In either auto or manual sync mode, you can click the little circular arrows icon next to your iDisk in the Finder sidebar to initiate a sync. You can also do so from the actions menu if the iDisk is selected in the sidebar.

Yeah, I too disabled the local copy of iDisk and my 15" PB SD is back up to speed again. I noticed that when I clicked on say iTunes which had been minimized to the dock I was waiting 4, 5 or even 6 seconds sometimes for the window to appear. I turned of iDisk and it is instantaneous again. I dont use iDisk that often so its not a problem to use it like under Jaguar. Its a nice idea to have a local copy but the functionality is quite there yet for me.

I wonder what the determining factor here is. As best I can tell, I get no speed increase by turning off iDisk synchronization, so I wonder what factor causes such a big difference for you guys.

Are there other threads about this issue elsewhere on the forums, or on other boards?
