hello

i am still a X.2 jaguar user, but wants to switch so fast i can to the black panther..

i have checked this forum for a while, and others as well, and is dissapointed. cause i see many panther users have several problems with incompatibility in mail/itunes/other programs!

my question is how big is the chance that i will have incompatibility problems?? do i have to make a clean install (format the drive and then install the fresh panther to avoid these kinds of problems??)

i need a answer quickly as the panther.. =))
thanxs,

I have worked with Panther in beta for 4 months and have had no problems with iTunes or Mail during their development. I think a lot of the problems people report are due to changes/mods/ additions they have made to their system. When installing Panther (or any major update) some planning will go a long way to make the results measure up to your expectations.

In 10.2, move any preference panes out of ~/Library/PreferencePanes (Home library). I created a folder ~/Library/PrefPanes(Disabled) to put them in. Turn off any login items that are listed in the Login System Preference. Look in /Library/StartupItems and move any folders there into a folder you create to hold them- similar to the Pref Pane folder mentioned above.

Restart your Mac and double check that System Preferences does have only the orginal items in it. Also verify that Login has no items listed. Check your hard drive to be sure you have 3 GB free for installation.

After booting from the Install Disc 1 CD, use the Disk Utility that is avaiable in the Installer to check and verify your hard drive. After this, do an Archive and Install installation.

Apple has no way of knowing what mods we all have, so making an installer that is bullet proof is beyond the scope.

All the problems I have read about result from not taking the 15 minutes to clean up the current system environment.

Do the above and you will have no problems. It is really just common sense.

Don't format your hard disk. Updating your 10.2 system should go well, but if you want to go sure then make an Archive and Install preserving your user settings.
