Hi

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to resize my partition in OS X 10.2. I have a 33 gig one now, and want to make it smaller so i can play around with other OSes on the second partition. Is there a tool freely available, or buyable?

The only way to resize the partition is to use the disk utility and reformat the computer, a data destructive act so back up your machine before undertaking it. fwiw, pickup a copy of panther and do it then, that way you get a partition the size youe need and fresh install of the os.

For years and years and years there's been a tool available on the Windows platform, 'Partition Magic', which allows you to resize partitions without having to wipe your volumes clean. Sure, it moves stuff around on your disk, and can take quite a while... but then again, a complete backup, wipe and restore is not a fast process either!

I've always wondered why no one ever implemented something like it on the Mac. Is there something about the Mac file system that precludes this?

There is. It's made by FWB. Unfortunately it only runs Classic Mac OS. You have to run it under OS 9 Or on another partition. Dunno what the status is on them bringing it to OS X.

The App is called FWB Partition Toolkit.

If you want to get a little complicated there is a way to do this. You have to download the Gentoo for PPC live cd. And on that CD is a utility called "parted", that will now resize hfs partitions.
