maybe I imagined this, but I swear reading ages ago that Panther had this as one of the new additions to the finder - the ability to display pdf/jpg icons as a preview of themselves (like .psd files have done since forever). In the default configuration I have, it doesn't seem to do this...do I need to switch something on?

In the View Options window (under the "View" menu in the Finder) check the "Show icon preview" item.

Incidentally, on my machine, if I modify an image and switch back to the Finder with the image icon showing, the Finder relaunches as it tries to update the icon. This is a new problem with Panther. Has anyone else experienced this?
