Why did I have to have this bright idea? I'm still running Jaguar, and noticed that I could update QuickTime Player to v6.4 (from 6.3). "Why not be cautious?" I thought. I'll move 6.3 out of app folder to root level of disk and keep it as backup if 6.4 has any glitch.

I update to 6.4.

Software Update not only places 6.4 in my app folder but replaces the root-level 6.3 with 6.4.

Oh well, I figure to trash root-level copy. No can do. (I'm in single-user, as administrator.)

I *can* trash the 6.4 copy in App folder & do & empty trash.

I *cannot* move the 6.4 copy to App folder. Permissions says owner is "System". Huh?

How did I lose control of QT? Why is it now owned by System when it wasn't before? How can a mere "administrator"-privileged user change something owned by "System" (other than restartin in OS9 or some such nonsense).

Is this a usual way of operating for Apple-provided apps? (is Apple now Microsoft?)

Please tell me there's something basic I need to learn about permissions that'll make this all simple.

I had that permission change happen to me once - before I understood the Ownership system in the Get Info box.

"System" ownership is not immutable! Click on the LOCK icon and it will change to an UNLOCKED icon. Then you can change ownership from "System" to "(me)"

Enjoy!

I have to add that just keeping a copy of the QT Player won't let you reverse to QT 6.3 so easily...

Qt is a set of extension build into the system to let you play all sort of multimedia files. The Quicktime Player is just a way to play those medias...

A lot of people thinks of Quicktime as the player without seeing the whole picture The iceberg comparasion is the best to understand it

If you get imcompatibilties between 6.4 and some files, playing them with the old 6.3 player won't help you. You'll have to re-install the whole QT 6.3 (and if you're running Panther 10.3 - you just can't reverse to 6.3 as 6.4 is build into it)

Thank, sunriser! That's a good head's up.

Hopefully I haven't created any problems, having QT (for a while) outside the App folder. Doesn't seem to. (I *was* able to move it back in after changing permisions, of course.)

For the non-guru, it is a bit weird that
"An app # An app" when it looks like it is.

Should I worry to change permission on QT back to "System" for any reason?

If you'd like to revert to quicktime 6.3, just go here and snag the 'reverter':

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120255

It seems like I am not the only one with qt6.4 issues.
