Panther's "FileVault" not encrypting my home dir...??

	I went thru the process of turning on FileVault for a user, setting master pwd, etc. Finally I am logged out and it begins the "Encoding Home Dir" screen and says "preparing" at the bottom - but then imemdiately I go to the login screen. When I login and go to System Preferences / Security, it still indicates FileVault is off. So I click Turn FileVault On, and the same process happens...says "preparing" then back to login screen immediately. Still not on. This is an iBook 700. What is the deal here? Thanks. blakespot
