After doing a fresh Panther install I had FileVault do its thing on my home directory. Then I copied my data over, did my apps install, etc.

Interestingly, copying 8GB of my /Music folder into my FileVault home directory took a long time....likely due to the on-the-fly encryption.

Today I removed FileVault (after hearing a bunch of ppl with concerns/bugs and wanting to experiment with some app hiccups that may be as a result of FileVault) -- before doing so, I deleted my /Music directory.

I then copied the same backup /Music directory into my now decrypted home directory -- it only took 6 minutes this time.

So, yeah, when doing filetransfers into/outof FileVault, there seems to be a major performance hit.

At least that's what I noticed. Otherwise, FileVault seemed to be okay.
