I recall reading somewhere that G5's purchased after Oct 8th would not require any shipping and handling fee. I got one on the 14th from an Apple Store, and thought I would be able to just swing by and pick up a copy of Panther on the 24th.

Was I wrong, and was the only difference that non-G5 computers or Jaguar were only eligible for the $20 update program if purchased after Oct 8th, and all G5 regardless of purchase date were eligible for the program?

I was thinking of waiting until Panther came installed until I read that. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

(Afterwards, I realized the wait wouldn't have been worth it, and it is nice to have the complete installation CD's anyway -- but all the same...)

Straight from apple:
For Power Mac G5 systems
Customers who purchase a qualifying new Power Mac G5 (M9020LL/A, M9031LL/A, M9032LL/A) regardless of purchase date that does not have Mac OS X Panther v10.3 included can upgrade to Mac OS X Panther.

If you purchased your Power Mac G5 directly from the Apple online store, follow one of these links to participate in the program

no mention about availablity of picking up panther for free at regular apple stores.

Bummer... I guess I imagined it, and probably should have waited another week.

Thanks
