Hi there,

I would like to report an issue/incompatibility when trying to work with blank CD-R disks in OS X v.10.3.

The issue manifests itself when I insert a blank CD-R into my external firewire drive and nothing happens in the Finder. When I try to use a CD-R in iTunes or Disk Utility, attempts to burn stall with the message waiting for drive.

When I look at console.log, I see the following message, "localhost diskarbitrationd[88]: unable to create disk, id = /dev/disk3."

The drive is reported by System Profiler as:
QBP-2 Bridge:

Manufacturer: QPS
Model: QBP-2 Bridge
Drive Type: CD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
Unit Spec Id: 24734
Unit Software Version: 10483
Firmware Revision: BS00

Please note that I can use Toast 6.01 to work with blank CDs. I'm just unable to use any CD-burning applications which require the Finder to recognize that a blank CD-R has been inserted.

If anyone has suggestions on how to fix this issue, please reply.

Cheeers,

Sounds like the drive isn't supported. That would be odd if it was supported in Jaguar, but it sounds like it's the drive and not the CD-Rs. I'd send feedback to Apple on this one. How old is the drive?

I don't think this problem is exclusive to Panther, though YOURS may be. I had the same problem in Jaguar with external FW devices attached.

Try putting in the CD-R w/ nothing attached into your regular optical drive. Is it recognized? (assuming you have a combo or super drive).

I believe the conflict is with your external drive.

Thanks for the reply.

I checked Apple's compatibility page and the drive's listed as supported (It's an old QPS drive bought in 2000 (Samsung 8x4x32 CD-R/RW mechanism)).

I've also sent feedback to Apple about the issue. Hopefully they'll recognise it's a bug and fix it.

Hi,

I've tried to get OS X to recognise a CD with only this drive attached with no luck (I have two external hard drives as well). Hopefully, it's a known bug and will be fixed.
