I know that this sounds silly, but, for some reason I really liked the temple sound that I used for letting me know when I had mail. Does anyone out there have the sound or tell me where I may get it? I will be appreciative.

Yeah, that doesn't sound like one that came with any Mac system that I'm aware of.
What mail application? Maybe it was bundled with that.

I'm glad to find that I'm not the only one who really liked that sound for reporting new mail. I have been keeping a separate copy of Temple since it disappeared with 10.2(?).
I can send it to you later tonight if you like? Let me know - send me a private message or something with your email/IM.

I know it was in 10.1.
If you still have your old install CD, you can get it with Pacifist.

Odd. The finder will play the sounds fine, but Quicktime refuses to open them. Yet they'll also play in iTunes. I'm confused...

Convert the sounds to MP3s in iTunes and then take those files and convert them to AIFF format through QuickTime. They then have to go in the /System/Library/Sounds folder before they will register as alerts.
I got my monkey back. I missed him.

Why on Earth would you do that when iTunes can convert it directly to AIFF?

How? The best I could find was Advanced -> Convert Selection to MP3 in iTunes 4.1. Did I miss something? iTunes can't import those sound files.

I'm still on iTunes 3, but if you go into the Preferences and change the Import settings to "AIFF Encoder" it'll change to "Convert Selection to AIFF" and away you go!

Works in iTunes 4.1 as well.
These old sounds are great! I love having my monkey and my duck back!
Where do the Startup Chimes reside?

Interesting:
I used iTunes to convert to .aiff.
Worked fine... however, when I added a .aiff file extension in the Finder, I lost the ability to preview the sounds in the Finder.
Note the existing sounds in /System/Library/Sounds/
are aiff format (with .aiff extension), but the preview is a QuickTime controller.
After converting the downloaded Mac OS 9 sounds to aiff with iTunes (before adding the .aiff ext.) the preview was a "Play Sound" button.
How very odd.

Not odd at all. That's how the Finder previews sys7 sounds. These are sounds stored in resources, and are naturally depreciated in Mac OS X.
