WTF..?! Waz' the flipping display have to do with it? 10.2 works just fine..even tho' it took me two years to switch from 9.
.....and of course, Formac doesn't have any upgrades for the dirivers..or whatever I need to make the switch. Groan.....
If someone finds a workaround - I sure love to hear it. jimcan@allturbo.com
Thanks for listening to my bitch...

Not knowing anything about that monitor my guess would be refresh rate. Panther has had issues with attempting to run a couple of my monitors at too high of a refresh rate on multiple machines. Don't know how you could change it on your primary display without hooking up a secondary display though..

How is it connected? Are you using the Multilink adaptor or do you have a special graphics card? If you're using Multilink, try turning it on _after_ botting the Mac, that cured some monitor problems I had with 10.2.

Stink different.

The problem is not the monitor it's the video card.
Neither the Formac Proformance card nor the Number 9 card will work under 10.3. The only solution is to buy a $450 multi-link adapter and a new compatible video card.
There is no hope of an update unless it were to come from the open source community.
Anyone who had dealt with formac knows they suck when it comes to updating and supporting their products.
My solution, I ebayed the sgi monitor and bought an apple 23inch. I actually prefer the sgi because it had a smaller footprint, but I'm much happier with the speed and lack of problems with the 23 inch and a native card.

Gratzie Barbarian - you're a gentleman, and correct in everything you say. Frickin' Formac has these wiseass FAQ responses and Number9 is deep-six'd. This SGI is a great window - I'm going to miss it.
I've got a 23" CRT and will reattach that to my G4's normal card...even tho I need to shore up the floor under it.
Thanks all for the consideration. I coudda lived with a fresh OS9....
Cheers!
Jim

note that if your sgi is in good shape you can still get a pretty good price for it if you can tap into the right markets.
I sold mine (with the card) to a publisher who is stuck in OS 9 for the time being for $1400 which nicely offset the cost of my cinema display. Oddly enough the fact that I had the card added to the price as they are hard to come by and they are the only way to get a pure digital signal with quicktime acceleration from an SGI monitor.
One of my friends opted for a multilink adapter which he uses with his radeon 9800. It works fine, but needs some TLC sometimes (sometimes things need to be started & connected in just the right order). Anyway it seems to work fine although there is a slight lack of crispness. SGI doesn't make the adapters anymore... the best place to find them is ebay although they are expensive $400-500.
I didn't want to shell out the extra dough for the adapter and add complexity to my system. With the cinema display I know that it will be supported at least for the next several years. I'm very happy with the apple display, although I do miss the form factor of the sgi....

It's too sad how the 1600sw story ends - a very impressive monitor, crippled by it's connector. If only SGI rereleased it with a DVI port, they'd have a top-seller.
