I am not sure if this question has been covered already, or if I am the first who wants to find the answer to the right way of upgrading to 10.3.

When I bought my new G4 PowerBook 17inch earlier this year, I backed up the hard drive of my Old Mac onto a bootable FireWire drive. I thought the easiest way would be to clone the operating system with all the apps and data onto the new PowerBook drive and then continue to work just as normal. After I’ve spoken with an Apple support assistant I was told that I should use the original CD that came with the PowerBook to install the operating system and then reinstall my apps. This is because there are new files on it, which are specifically written to support the 17inch PowerBook.

Now if I do a clean install from the Panther CD, wouldn’t I just loose all those specifically written files or are they unnecessary after all.
I am a bit confused with that guys….. Please help.

10.3 Has newer files than are probably on your Powerbook. It will update your system. You don't need to reformat as you can do an install/archive. That will give you a clean install of the OS and keep files that you might need in an archived folder.
