I've got a non-OEM Pioneer DVR-106D SuperDrive b/c I wanted DVD+R support that Panther has, however, in Panther's "System Profiler" is says Disc Burning isn't supported...any ideas? I searched at Xlr8YourMac with no avail. Any firmware flashes/hacks?

Xlr8YourMac does mention that he has the Pioneer DVR-106D working in 10.3...read through the page carefully, and that it needs to be set as master, not slave. There's a whole section on installing DVD R drives, the problems encountered, possible solutions. What machine do you have this installed on? Did it work before, in your previous OS

There aren't any hacks quite yet, but Toast Titanium 6 works great for me and my unsupported burner.

Hmm, well it's in the MDD PowerMac I have, as seen in my sig.
I installed it as the Master Drive & my Apple-installed ComboDrive as the Slave Drive...not just cable select, I actually set the jumpers.
I never tried it in Jaguar...I'm hoping they'll release a new firmware soon to make it work in Panther though.

Hi AssassyN, I'll be following this thread carefully as I'd like to add a '106 to my MDD DP1.25.
I noticed on the xlr8your mac site the slightly different firmware versions, and was under the impression that the OEM version may have the DVR-106RD firmware that is not recognized as supported.
I was hoping that the fill retail is the DVR-106D but I'm starting to wonder if you take a chance on which version you'll get!

Well I can't see Pioneer NOT eventually providing Mac firmware to make it fully useable in Panther, escp. since Apple uses their drives.
But I got Toast 6, and sure enough, it's totally recognizable. However, I'd love native disc burning in Finder if possible.

Interesting. I just bought one for my Sawtooth and 10.3 picked it right up. Not only that it allows me all the burning features. I didn't touch any jumpers. I just installed it as is out of the package.

Hmm, well I did touch the jumpers actually. This may (though it shouldn't) have something to do with it...
I have the Apple ComboDrive on top, jumpers set to "Slave", however, because it's on top, it's plugged into the "Master" IDE cable channel...but this shouldn't matter since I'm not using Cable Select, rahter I've got my jumpers set, correct?
I've got the Pioneer drive installed on the bottom, jumpers set to "Master", but of course, it's using the typical "Slave" IDE cable channel since it's on bottom.
I didn't think the position along the IDE cable mattered so long as your jumpers were set and you WEREN'T using "Cable Select"...am I wrong?

I found on my linux box, that I had to have the correct cable position even though I had the jumpers set. I beleive that cable select is relatively (compared to the life of IDE) new, and that it came out so that you could just plug and play. However, you can manually tell it which position the drive is at as well (using the jumpers), but that master/slave position must correspond with where the drive is on the cable.

I've been had
Dangit...I switched positions so the SuperDrive was on top, ComboDrive on bottom, Master/Slave respectively.
Bootup, still no supported Disc Burning...I get to investigating, and it's seems I've been ripped. Under all the "Pioneer" markings, this is a POS "Acer" OEM drive...clearly seen as a DVR-106"R"D, rather than 106"D", by "System Profile". This equates to it NOT being supported by Apple apps. Yes, Toast 6 still operates it, but dang...to all those looking to get it cheap from AVLogic.com ( http://avlogic.com/product.cgi?code=18030077) which is where I got mine, DON'T!
Buy from OWC.com...it's more, but you'll get what you pay for, and it's the real deal. Live & learn.

Or you can buy it from me. I sell them as well. The real ones. I just got one to put in my G4 Sawtooth and it shows up in System Profiler as an Apple shipped one. Current price on it is 175 The price seems to be dropping almost every week. PM me is you are interested.

I wish man...I can't stomach another purchase right now. I'll just have to use Toast unless you'd do a trade or something...sorry.

Hi AssasyN!!
I may have found a cure to your 106RD problems - it involves re-flashing the drives firmware to switch it back to true Pioneer firmware. You will need a PC (unfortunately). Have a read, but it looks like you want the "Agent Smith" or "NIL's" update. Good luck.

Hope this may help!

Thanks a bunch for the link...it'll be a real pain to get this drive outta my Mac, take out a drive in my buddy's Dell, get it there to flash, etc...I'm gonna try this later today in VirtualPC and see if that works though.

Well VPC doesn't recognize it like a normal PC would, so that's a no-go...I may try the flash on a PC later if I can find the time.

Hi AssassN--- I got my drive from AVLogic also and like yours it was a Pioneer 106 RD.
I put the drive in my friends Dell and flashed the drive to a true Pioneer 106 D. I also updated the firmware to Pioneers latest 1.07 version.
The drive is in a firewire case and Panthers System Profiler reports it as "Apple Supported/Shipped". The drive also has Buffer Underrun
Prevention w/ Toast 6. The drive works perfect!
Please read all instructions to flashing your drive. You can get Pioneers offical firmware update here: http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/multime...#DVD-Recorders . The link for the 106 D flash is here: http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=19003. Good Luck---

This is extremely helpful, thanks a ton!
I'm gonna try to find time to get the drive in my PC at home to flash the firmware & then re-install in my Mac...it won't be this weekend, but hopefully I'll get it done within a week or two...I'll post results! It seems other Mac users have done this w/ success, so that's good news.
