In case anyone is interested, I checksummed my 7B85 disks against the disks I just brought home from the store and they were different.

For what it's worth this is NOT to say that 7B85 is not the retail version - more than likely what I had before was either hacked or modified in some way.

So, if anybody thinks he has 7B85 installed, I would probably reinstall with the retail disks just in case. I had actually considered buying the disks and not installing them since I had already used 7B85 and therefore didn't need to rebuild my system.

And, I know, I suck. I broke down and downloaded 7B85 because I couldn't wait. I never had any intention of not purchasing it, however.

Ah good you were asking about piracy, you were giving good info out! Anyhow, I bought the retail version anyway, sometimes I just prefer the boxed version (esp. when it comes to an OS).

Strange, the GM copy that I received several weeks ago turned out identical when comparing the MD5 sums of all the files.

I've put up my data in case others want to compare. The tools I used to build the md5 files and compare them are also there. The .md5 files are formated as:

filename^md5sum

checkPanther.pl is used to build the md5 file list (redirect output to a file). comp-md5.pl compares the results of two .md5 files.

Example use:
(insert retail disc)
% ./checkPanther.pl /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1/ > retail-disc_1.md5

(swap retail for gm disc)
% ./checkPanther.pl /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1/ > 7b85-disc_1.md5

% ./comp-md5.pl retail-disc_1.md5 7b85-disc_1.md5

(final command will report any differences found)

Yeah, that's why I don't think it has anything to do with the any specific build (7B85), I either had a previous build with a hacked version number, or in the process of imaging them someone managed to change something.

At any rate, better safe than sorry. I never really felt good about installing prerelease OS software.

I think you got different results due to different imaging methods.
