I installed Fink for the first time last night on my G5 running Panther. All went well, and I used apt-get to install Gimp. Apt-get downloaded and installed alot of other packages like passwd etc. Gimp ran fine in X11 and I was happy, until I restarted the machine. The login window does not show my user accounts, and I cannot login with any username and password, even root. I can boot into single-user mode but I am not sure what to do after that.

I assume I need to restore a backup of my Netinfo database. I have a backup from a few days ago in /var/backups/local.nidump. I found an article at Apple's support site http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107210 that outlines restoring your local netinfo db on OS X Server. Is the process the same on Panther? Do you think that will fix the issue? Thanks alot!

I'm not going to call an ambulance this time because then you won't learn anything.

Probably. Try it, nothing can go wrong your system if ****ed up anyway. If it doesn't work --> reinstall.
