Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I've freakin' searched to my exhaustion.
My issue is after installing Panther, all attempts at a network connection (HTTP, Software Update, anything..) fail on the first try, but succeed on the 2nd try.
Example: Going to any website the first time, Safari says "Server not found". If I try to go to it again (quickly after it fails) it succeeds, if I wait too long it fails again. With Software Update, it always failed to download on the first try, but quickly trying the download again got it to go through. With iTunes, same issue on Internet Radio stations. Same thing on IE, Mozilla, Camino. Everything..
This all worked fine on every previous OS, and I can find no other posts about this problem. I've sent feedback to Apple already.
I did this initially with an upgrade install, and to try to fix it I formatted (even zeroed) my disk and did a clean install, didn't fix it.
Idears?

Maybe DNS resolution? If the first DNS server listed is unreachable, maybe it won't automatically try the second one?
Try going by IP and see if it works every time. It really sounds like name resolution problems...

I have the same problem, redJag. When I connect to really anything. When I go to load a website, it hangs. Generally, the progress bar stops in the middle of the address on load. Then I click stop. Click back in the url field to get the type curser blinking after the address, and hit enter. Walla--the page loads. It doesn't happen all the time, but it happens very frequently. This is based on a fresh install of Panther. So, I feel your pain. I hope something is figured out about this.

Wow, dude, I am so stupid. See, I figured that wasn't it since my PC was doing just fine. I even hooked the modem (DSL) directly to my mac but I guess I didn't wait long enough, or maybe it just can't discover DNS servers that well. I fixed it by putting the IP of my PC (it shares the DSL connection) in as my DNS server. Wowzers. I am so happy. Thanks too all. Mostly geekwagon and my ineptness.

No problem. I have this problem sometimes if I have torrents going and the upstream is saturated on my cable modem. I fixed it more or less the same way you did, I started using my Linux machine as a DNS server again instead of the one that the cable company provides via DHCP.
Something is definitely b0rked in resolver-land on Panther (it's been doing this since the WWDC build..) but at least we have a workaround.
