Can you just use Disk Utility as normal?

Also, can you boot off the first install CD? How can you make a recovery/install CD you can boot off of?

Why would you even need to?

When I travel I like to carry system disks and prefer to carry copies of my disks rather then the easy to scratch or loose originals.

To duplicate an existing install CD, just use Disk Utility to make an image and burn the image. (In Disk Utility's outline view on the left, be sure to select the topmost item for the CD when converting to a disk image, not the "Mac OS X Install" item.)

To make your own bootable CD is a bit more difficult, but there's third-party software to help with this. Look for BootCD on Macupdate or versiontracker.

One of the very first things I did with my new Panther CDs was to drop disk 1 onto the floor and get it all nicely scratched up. I would deffinitely like to have a backup in case my butter fingers decide to toss the CDs to the floor again.
