Problems upgrading to Panther

I am not sure did anyone experience problem upgrading to Panther from OS 10.2.8. When I tried loading the Panther, the upgrade disk showed there is no previous OS X software in my Hardisk. I have a 17' Rev A with Mac OS X 10.2.8. Did I do it wrongly?
