Does Panther implement the Desktop differently? The boot disk used to be automatically assigned to the upper right corner of the desktop with other disks arrayed beneath the boot disk.. Why are my disks flung over the desktop now/ And when I arrange my desktop why does Panther insist on changing it..? The only way I can keep my desk in order is to " keep arranged by...." but this prevents my moving folders around the desktop. What gives?

check view options to see if you have the "keep arranged by..." turned off. other than that, the new finder doesn't let you choose between normal spacing and tighter spacing for desktop icons. also check your settings for "snap to grid."

This is silly. What your saying is the only way I can keep my disk icons in the upper right hand corner instead of moving around the desktop is to enable " keep arranged by icon, name or whatever" This totally restricts the placement of folders and files on the desktop. Shouldn't I be able to arrange my files and folders on the desktop the way I like and have the Finder remember where I placed them? It has always been that way?

OS X has always been flaky with remembering icon position. I currently have no problem having the desktop remember where to put all my icons, but it may take a few placements/logouts/logins to get your placements to stick.

It seemed I had it figured out by unlicking all options after having" arranged by name" to lock the disk icons in the corner but it reverted to flakey behavior one again. Screw it. Gatesian behavior on my desktop, Internet systems preference through Mail or Safari, whats next? We need to nip this sh*t in the bud!
