Some background:
So I only just noticed that my CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive seems to be flaking out (on a Quicksilver Dual 800). I put the Panther CD into the drive and occasionally it mounts, lets me run the installer for a bit but then says error and forces me to restart (or it does the initial restart, then hangs for a minute, ejects the CD, and boots from the HD). Other times, it simply refuses to mount the CD and just waits a minute before ejecting it (no message on screen).
Ok, so this sucks.
The dilemma:
But right now, I don't care about the CD drive. I'll deal with it later. In the mean time, I would like to install Panther and don't know how to do it.
My girlfriend has a 15 inch Powerbook (with Panther installed), so I was thinking maybe I could connect her machine to mine via Firewire and install it through her CD drive over to my hard drive...? Would this work, and how would I mount the drive/boot up differently to do this (is it something about firewire target disk mode?)?
Or if that's no good, any other ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help!

myPhoto: all you have to do is plug in your digital camera, import your photos as you normally would into iPhoto, organize them, add whatever captions you want, and voila! Your photos are on your web page! And what did you have to do to put them there? Simply install myPhoto.

I'm pretty sure you restart holding T for target disk mode, maybe resart like that and then run the installer from her computer and select your 'external firewire HD' as the target to install.

So I was doing the Firewire Target Disk mode deal, and things seemed to be going fine until the installer gave an error at some stage that was something along the lines of verifying my hard drive...disk utility and norton both confirm problems with my hard drive...
time to work on those

Update: fsck and disk utility can't do the repair. I only have Norton v7, which when run from the laptop (running Panther) and my machine in target disk mode, norton lists no hard drives. Goody...
any suggestions to repair my hard drive without spending extra cash on a new version of Norton? I'd rather avoid backing up my data and reformatting...but if I must...
