I purchased Panther from apple.com, but while waiting for shipping, downloaded and installed Panther 7b85 (I was working on something involving reading lots of PDFs, and Adobe Reader was giving me trouble, so I wanted to use the updated Preview). I installed on a new partition, transferred all of my files, and now have everything set up how I want it, but the version I have installed is a downloaded copy. Is there any difference at all between the copy I installed and the one sitting in the box on my shelf? Will future updates fail to install, or anything like that? I really don't want to bother going through the installation process again.

Maybe 'cause he feels like being legal and supporting Apple?

In answer to the original question: There *shouldn't* be any difference.

If it's the same thing, I think I'll buy a copy too.

The sad part is, some people still don't think it's wrong to download an OS and not pay for it.

You can think it's too expensive, you can think Apple should give you the OS for free, but it's still wrong.

I downloaded it, bought it and bought a dual G5. I downloaded it because I didn't want to wait any longer to install it on my G5. I'm legit, just wasn't for a couple weeks.

I'm not saying i agree, or disagree with you downloading it from the web/hotline/torrentt... but I think that "story" you just gave is utter bullsh1t .
That said, no there is no difference (for the hundreth time).

What grounds do you have to call someone else's words bullshit?

If that works than I'm calling you out on being a human! Your really just a smart robot typing meaningless words. Everything you say is made up.

I'm not vouching for the original poster, but I have the same situation. I'm a developer (not a paying one), and I needed to test my app in 10.3. And to boot, 10.2's dev tools went tits up on me a week before the release so to do any debugging at all I needed an update (and the August dev tools update crashed Installer.app).

Anyway, I now have the leaked 7B85 installed, and am too lazy to reinstall with my legit retail copy. I did install the retail one on my laptop at work, and I don't see any differences, FWIW...

By far some of the most complicated and sophisticated pieces of software are operating systems. It's a lot more work than say something like Photoshop.

The point I am trying to make is, of all the things that one can pirate, pirating an operating system has to be one of the worst things. So much time, money, blood and sweat goes into it. It's the critical piece of software that every computer user in the world uses the most. It's the foundation upon which all other software is built. Frankly, I am surprised operating systems don't cost a lot more than they do. People should count their blessings that so much work has been put into these things, and that they don't cost more than they do. Stealing them, because they feel they have some sort of right to an OS is so twisted.

i don't know how things work at Apple, but i read somewhere that Microsoft makes a ton more money off the whole Office suite than it does on Windows. there was quite a big difference in revenue too. can't remember where i saw that though, sorry.

off topic: i wish we could have some moderation in here. these threads are ridiculous and should be locked/deleted.

"pirating an operating system has to be one of the worst things."

Except regarding Windows -- then it's just one of the most FOOLISH things.

I couldn't get Jaguar to save network passwords, I couldn't get view options to stick, I couldn't get my keychain to unlock at login...I wish I could've used these features that I paid good money for when I bought Jaguar. I don't really feel like paying another $200 CAD and hoping the features work as they're supposed to.

Oh yah, in before the lock.™

Yes, 7B85 is panther, they are the same. However, I like having the disks as back up, and I also like supporting companies so I will buy their products if they are deserving. I will always pay for OSes and will almost always pay for Apple software just to help keep them afloat.
