I did an Archive/Install of Panther on my home machine that already had Developer Tools installed from 10.2; however, I noticed the other day on my work machine (did a Clean Install of Panther) that when I installed the Developer Tools that are bundled with the OS under "Installers"....it put them on the root of the drive (instead of under "Utilities" like in 10.2) and sports a new icon, etc. etc....what else is new? Are all the Developer applications newer and been advanced with Panther? Does an Archive/Install not include the installer for the Dev Tools?
Thanks.

they're newer and they should be on the 4th disc (needs to be installed seperately).
you should also be able to download them for free from the ADC site also.

Great, thanks! I figured this new XCode was basically going to replace some of the Dev Tools...I'll give it a shot!

I have been playing with XCode this weekend, it really is a great package.
The improved documentation window is superb.. you can search all the various API documentation very quickly. The new symbols feature is also a really slick thing. This is such a great thing.. all the hard work they put into it really shows.
Oh, and the distributed building is also really cool.
Hmm, this is a big improvement on Project Builder. Great job Apple!

Xcode also have a bunch of new and nasty bugs. Sometimes it refuses to compile and build without reason, and just by relaunching Xcode it all works again. Also, the most crashes I had with Panther come from the Xcode application itself.
We'll see in a December 2003 update

The Strange thing is that if you install the documentation from the 4th Panther disc it refers to Project Builder and not XCode. Well, at least the Java documentation.

It is nice, but it is quite buggy. Hopefully they will release an update before too much time passes...

Okay, I got the XCode tools installed now from Disc 4; however, do I have to keep the "Developer" folder on the root of my HD?
This reminds me, did Panther finally fix the "I moved my Applications into other folders, will the Installer actually find it on my HD now even though it's not where Apple wants the Application to be" bug?

Yes, the developer tools need to be left where the installer put them, and Apple obviously does not consider the other problem to be a bug, since it has not been "fixed."
Personally, I don't consider it a "bug..." it functions exactly as Apple intended it to. But, I do consider it a flawed implementation of a feature.

Fair enough, flawed indeed...
