Whenever I startup my computer or press the power button, the character palette appears. This is getting very annoying, as it floats above everything else and I have to close it each time.

Anyone know what might be causing this?

This happens to me too, so I'm very interested in a solution! To add to the original poster's description of the problem: I notice that the Character Palette appears whenever a system windows pops up: i.e. shutdown dialog, waking from sleep when entering password, login, force quit, etc.

OK, after just a bit of fiddling around, i found the solution. I went to System Preferences->International->Input Menu, and I made sure Character Palette was unchecked. I had also disabled the input menu in the menu bar. Now it doesn't pop up all the time.
