Someone has sent me a CD with lots of big files on it that I need to access. It's the first time I've had a CD that won't mount. I've tried using Disk Copy and Disk Utility to mount it, but I get an "input/output" error.
It will mount fine on the Windows machine at work, but the files are too big to email and the Mac is not networked to the PC.
I'm using OS X 10.2.8 on an eMac, 768MB of RAM.
Hope someone can help!! Thanks!!

If your Mac can't mount the disc that is very bizarre. It sounds like it could be one of a couple of problems. Your best bet would be to reburn the disc using your Windows machine (ie. copy the files to your hard drive and then burn on a new disc)... Make sure to select ISO9660 since this is the most standard CD format for use on most platforms. Then try to put the CD in your Mac to grab the files.
Let us know!

If it was burned using Easy CD creator on the PC, I've noticed that it is creating CD's by default using UDF 2.0. I ran into this problem and had to go into the settings and set it to ISO in the advanced settings.
good luck,
dave

It they were using DirectCD that may be an issue also. This is a format we can't read. If I recall correctly it treats the CD like a HD so you can just drag and drop files to the CD. I'm not sure on that but I'm sure others will correct me. Regardless, make sure they are avoiding DirectCD.

Until recently we have always been able to read CDs burned using DirectCD on a PC by using Virtual PC even though I do not have any CD burning software installed in VPC. The first time I inserted one of these DirectCDs, Windows asked to load the Roxio drivers. After the obligatory Windows restart (after installing almost anything) we've been able to read all the DirectCDs we've been given. But recently we got a DirectCD (from the same client that always uses DirectCD) that simply won't read on any of our Macs with or without VPC. The TiBook simply ejects it and the PowerMac G4 w/ superdrive offers to format it Meanwhile, VPC keeps asking us to insert the CD. BTW we have tried 3 different CD-R media. We even gave him some of the media we always use.
We've talked with this client and DirectCD is the only CD burning software he has on his PC. So he now sends his files via the network to a coworker who burns the CD using Veritas. It sure would be nice to find a way to read DirectCD discs on our Macs. Asking a client to "do something special" so we can read his CDs just helps perpetuate the "Mac are not compatible" idea in PC users minds.
