I've tried and tried to do a "secure delete" but NOTHING happens. No progress bar, nothing, and this is happening on both of my Macs.
Thinking it's just a long process and I'm just not being patient, I create a very small file, around 10k. Move it to the trash, then secure delete it. Nothing happens, but I wait hours and hours thinking maybe there is no progress bar for this. After hours, it's still sitting in my trash can, and deletes instantly with a basic delete.
Anybody else having this problem?

Yep, identical.

I fixed it. In case anyone is wondering, you have to have the BSD subsystem installed to use Secure Delete.
You'd think Apple would have removed this item from the Menu if you can't use it without BSD, but oh well. Works now!

I would recommend always installing BSD subsystem, MANY programs use it, and do not even think that it could not have been installed.

Agreed. With my previous OS X (10.0-10.2) installations I always installed BSD, but for some reason I thought I could do without it and save the disk space. Guess not!
Lesson learned.

Ha ha! I just inherited an old G3 tower- I installed Panther on the 6 gig HD, and I tried to get away with not installing the BSD subsystem, but then discovered that I could not do the secure delete.
