Users who have done an upgrade install of Panther, Mac OS X 10.3, can run into printing problems if they run Disk Utility's 'Repair Permissions' function. We've put together a package which repairs the print system.

The Panther upgrade install appears to forget to create a couple of new Panther users. In particular the 'lp' and 'postfix' users are not created. When permissions are repaired via Disk utility the missing users cause damage to the print system.

The attached package does not install any files. It runs an Apple provided script in order to create the needed users. Once the new users are created it deletes any existing printer queues. Next it restarts the print server, cupsd, and lastly it tries to remake the print queues for any attached and powered USB printers. The net result is that is will undo the damage done by repair permissions and you should be able to print again.

The download is a zip file. Simply open the zip file and it will create an installer package. Run the installer package to repair the print system

Thanks, this enabled my Epson C82 to print again. After installing Panther all print jobs to the C82 would be stopped. I could start them again in the print center, or whatever it is called now, but they would be stopped again after a few seconds.

Interestingly, my Hp 1200 was able to work normally without this fix.

This package also repaired an annoying bug that caused disk utility to always repair disk permissions in the private>cups file area. Thanks.

Can you run Repair Permissions after running this script w/o causing the problem all over again?

After having run the script, Repair Permissions can be executed normally.

After installing Panther, my priningt went kaput. I installed the latest HP drivers and that didn't work. I ran this script and voilą. However, if I log out and log back in, my printer doesn't work...unless I run this script. Somehow, that doesn't seem right.
