So, officially apple says the issue is the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware 1.02 is to blame. But, of course i've read reports of people with FW 400 drives being affected.
My question is, do the drives only get erased or unrecognizable only after a restart while the drive is connected?

I believe they become corrupted to the point where data cannot be accesed anymore. I think. I still have yet to plug in my OWC HD yet to panther.

Yes, there were reports of some FW400 drives getting corrupted as well. Most manufacturers issued firmware updates already (i.e. LaCie). Just for the record my 80Gb LaCie d2 and 30Gb FireLite don't have an issue w/ 10.3, although there is an update for the LaCie d2.
SOMEBODY TELL ME, WHY ARE THESE UPDATES FOR OS 9 (I.E. YOU NEED OS 9 TO RUN THEM, NOT CLASSIC)?
1. I don't want to install OS 9, just to remove it again.
2. A lot of people can only run Classic, which won't let them run the updates.
3. WTF
[end rant]

I've not run into it on my FW400 drive yet, but I'm only plugging it in after the machine has booted just in case.
I'm hoping Apple will release a fix for this also (why is it solely the case manufacturer's fault if FW drives worked in Jag?) as I have a generic case and don't know if I can get a firmware update.

So just to get things perfectly straight:
Just by chance, I happened to have my fw drive off when I rebooted into Panther for the first time. I haven't had to reboot since. I have no idea what bridge my drive uses, it was put together by my local mac shop. As long as I never reboot while the drive is on, am I safe?

PLEASE, guys, can we have an answer to this FW thing. Can I install Panther onto a partition on my external FW400 without dosing up on valium beforehand?
Thanks

The president of Oxford says that no drives with the 911 chip will suffer the data loss that some are experiencing with Panther.
Macintouch has some coverage and links

In that same Macintouch article SmartDisk says it's drives have no problems with Panther because they don't use the Oxford chip.
