Hi,
(Running 10.2.8)
I have a disc image which i want to burn onto a cd as a bootable image. it is saved as a cd/dvd master with no encyption and is 706mb as a standalone image, however when the image is mounted it is only 640mb (i.e. perfect for burning onto a blank 700mb cd. However this will not work as a bootable cd.
Disk utility tells me that the 'capacity' of the image is 706mb but the actual used amount is only about 640mb....HOW DO I COPY IT ONTO A CD!!!!????
I have tried so many different methods i am pretty much over it now so any advice/hints would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Jim.

Bootable disc images have extra files on them that allow them to be bootable. These files are not normally seen, but the computer sees them and uses them to boot.

If having the CD you make be bootable is not an issue, and all you want to do is copy files from it, then simply dragging files from the disc image onto a blank Data CD should work.

What is the disc image of and what format is it in? .iso? .dmg? .img?

If you have Toast you could try burning the image with it.

The image is .dmg.
It's an image of a Panther install disk. The reason i want to copy it is because i live at College a long way from home and i want to have a backup copy of Panther available to me in case my computer dies while i'm at College and i need to re-install Panther. I managed to do the same thing with Jaguar a few months back with no problems, but Panther is causing me serious issues!
Hence it is essential that the 'invisible' contents of the disc which make it 'bootable' be included.
Also, i have tried Toast (v6) to make a copy and the fact that the image is 706mb (> 700mb) prevents me from burning it onto a cdr.

Any other suggestions???

missing media burner will let you overburn discs, I've burned over 800 MB on 700 MB discs. I heard that BootCD is an app to use for making bootable images to burn, I plan on trying this myself soon.

If it is an image of a Panther CD, it shouldn't be 706MB. Create a new image from your Panther CDs and try again.

Agreed. My Panther backup images are under 650MB each (created with Disk Copy, although Toast would have produced the same result).

Thanks for the tip guys, must admit i completely overlooked the possibillity that my original image could have stuffed up somehow (wonder why???).
I'll try making a new image and then I should be cookin' with gas! Thanks again!

The neat thing about BootCD is that is uses your current system software to make a bootable CD. It won't make a copy of the install CDs, you'll have a bootable CD just like the good 'ole classic Mac OS had, bringing you right to the Finder so you can launch utilites and such.

I tried making a copy of the Panther CD using Toast, however the 'Install Mac OS X' file inside of the 'Welcome to Mac OS X' folder comes out as an unuseable folder on the burned CD. It's strange because it shows up fine, as the installation script, when I mount the .dmg from which I'm buning. Anyone know how to correct this?
