So i formatted to install panther and completely forgot about os9. Now i would like to be able to run classic apps. A genius at the apple store said all i have to do is copy the os9 system folder from someoneelse's mac onto my mac and i would be all set. Is this correct?

That will work. However, it will be simpler if you just use your PowerBook's Restore CD/DVD to reinstall Classic.

That is suprising since the genius (read: dumbass) at the apple store told me that i could not do that.
"to do that with the restore cd, you need to reinstall everything, then upgrade to panther again"

He may have been thinking of the older Restore CDs. That was the case with the older style. The newer Restore CD/DVD lets you pick and choose what you want to restore.

Oh babies, do you guys know that there is a hidden folder on the Restore DVD?
In Finder, Go > Go to Folder
type:
/NAME OF THE DVD/.images/
And you will get all the software including OS 9!

Yes, I do know that is there. However, it is only on the newer style Restore discs. Also, it is easier to tell someone to just use the Software Restore app since it is more straight forward and does all the work for them.
