I'm a power user and installed Panther very carefully, checking the hd before and after installation (which was an archive and install). But Panther is acting weird: I have one folder in my user directory whose custom icon kept becoming generic in the sidebar, even after I deleted the folder and assigned a different custom icon. Then that very same folder caused all sorts of trouble in Eudora because it was designated as my attachments folder. That problem seems to have gone away -- and I've run DW 3 which found very little (text encoding settings for "Favorites," which aren't even used any more, + something about the catalog file which saved space) and checked permissions (nothing wrong). Now my EndNote libraries are refusing to let me enter accented characters into the fields of my bibliographic references.

Any idea what might be causing such strange behavior? Is there any way to erase the hd, thus starting over, and yet do an archive and install that would transfer stuff from a backup on an external hd? I'd like to avoid the reformat and clean install which would take many hours.

You can use Carbon Copy Cloner or something similar to clone your boot drive onto a backup drive, format the boot drive, clone everything back, and then do an Archive and Install.

However, if you're trying for a clean install, the best idea is to save only your home folder (assuming, of course, that all of your data is stored here), and reinstall everything else. After doing a clean install, simply drag over your files, repair permissions, and you should be good to go.

Any idea what could make it impossible to type accented characters in EndNote? I have no problem in Word. When I installed Panther, I did a custom install without the languages, but that shouldn't be a factor, should it?
