These are the traditional Mac shortcuts:

Command-Left Arrow - jump to beginning of line.

Command-Right Arrow - jump to end of line.

Home - Top of page

End - Bottom of page

In addition, OS X adds the emacs shortcuts. All Cocoa apps support these. Some Carbon apps may as well, but only if the developer has updated to support them. They are really slick as they can be done with the left hand alone and your hands don't have to move from their positions on the keyboard.

Control-E - end of line
Control-A - beginning of line

NOTE: None of the above-mentioned shortcuts work in Word. Word uses the Windows shortcuts of home/end instead. This is because Word sucks. Fortunately, you can go to Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard in Word and assign the proper shortcuts, but it's really annoying that you have to do this. . However, the traditional Mac shortcuts work in every other Mac program, and the emacs shortcuts work in quite a few as well.

Try CMD-Home and CMD-End to do what you want in Word.

Which is different (of course) to normal OS X apps - which would be CMD-Up Arrow, CMD-Down Arrow I believe.

On the ibook, the left arrow is also labeled as the "end" key. To make it act like the end key, press fn+left arrow. It makes it go to the end of the line in Word.

The "End" key should be right below the "Home" key.

not exactly, on the ibook the end is the right arrow, and the home is the left arrow.

for the record, the up arrow is page up, and ill let you guess what the down arrow is.

I haven't tried it in Panther, but can't iKey or Quickkeys remmap home/end to cmd-left-arrow and cmd-right-arrow?

I'll try it when I get home.

If not then a true keyboard remapper would be very nice.

The computers at your school have the old Apple USB keyboards, the kind that came with computers between the Bondi Blue iMac and the original Yikes and Sawtooth G4s (all the computers that had a hockey puck for a mouse). To refresh everyone's memory (as little as I want to remember this), here's a picture of the relevant bit of the keyboard:

As you can see, there is a home key, but no end key. This is because Apple's industrial designers were, at the time, apparently on crack. There were various utilities created around that time to provide the functionality of and end key, but none of the ones I came across just now work with OS X.

In terms of keyboard shortcuts, I just found a couple REALLY nice ones which, I'm fairly sure, have been present for at least a decade now -- I just never took the time to find them. They are as follows:

Option-left: go to beginning of word
Option-right: go to end of word
Option-up: go to beginning of paragraph
Option-down: go to end of paragraph
Control-left: go to beginning of line
Control-right: go to end of line
Control-up: go to beginning of document
Control-down: go to end of document

The option-modifiers are especially useful when you hold down shift as well; this creates a selection, which makes it really, really easy to replace a word -- just option-left arrow until you're to the right of the word, then option-shift-left arrow to highlight it, and type the new word. Pretty spiffy.

edit: Oh, yes! I almost forgot to mention something important. All relatively recent Macs (like within the past two years or so) come with the new Apple Pro Keyboard, which once again has all the keys one would expect on a real keyboard in the traditional sizes and arrangements, like so:

But he said he was using eMacs. Why on earth would an eMac have one of those ancient piece of excrement keyboards?

haha .. i wish thats what my keyboard looked like! but you got the hockey puck style mouse right! IM IMPRESSED!

the only reason i believe thats not my keyboard is that there is literally for some stupid reason just a home key.

and secondly - we are running g4 towers on the old imac screen (the bubbles and what not). im still a newb at the mac thing (the last time i had an apple was the apple IIgs ... so yea .. but workin on gettin my ibook!)

i will let you guys know in a few hours .. that class starts at 11:15.

In a school, there's no guarantee the keyboard which is attached to the computer, is actually the one that came with it. I work in the IT department of a school, and we're forever having to move keyboards/mice around. Mostly because a Pro keyboard has become faulty and has been replaced by an old iMac keyboard.

The other possibility is that the stupid new keyboards shipping with all new Macs now, has been put away in a cupboard. They're absolutely horrible. Their only saving grace is the fact that the USB ports are now on the back of the keyboard. Other than that, they're not adjustable, and all the keys are squished together (specifically function keys)....although it does mean they've managed to squeeze another 3 Fkeys in. Goodness only knows why though!

I should point out also that on Panther, at least on my powerbook G4 with external USB keyboard, Home and End do nothing in cocoa applications. I'm sure they used to go to the start or end of a line, but maybe I dreamt that.

Wow - that gets the incoherent/unintelligible post of the thread award. It's funny that you are in class - is it English by any chance?

lol mike those aren't emacs at all, those are early powermac g4 towers + trinitron studio displays.

Loved those old monitors.. the keyboards were downright disgusting, though.

If it REALLY bugs you, carry in any old USB keyboard you may have laying around, and chances are it'll work fine.

I really feel sorry for ya though. OS 9?! EEW!

Yes, the dock is meant to replace the application switcher menu, but there are a couple shareware apps that bring it back. Also, with 10.3, or app switcging options have grown with Exposé and the new visuals that appear when using command+tab.

If you want an Applications menu on OS X, the easiest way to do it is to drag the Applications folder into the Dock. Then you can either click-and-hold or control-click on the folder (or right click on it if you have a multibutton mouse). Voila, you get a menu with all your applications in it.
