I have a TiBook 800 with a broken combo drive and I'd like to upgrade Jaguar to Panther. Can I use an external firewire cd drive to do the job?

That's what I did; however, I heard some brands aren't supported with that...

Mine is a LiteOn 52x32x52 CD/RW External FW drive...

Yes, you can.

Jus bear in mind that holding C won't work -- either hold down Option at startup, or boot from your hard drive and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon on the CD (from the Finder).

If you have another working computer you can do this:

start the computer using the 10.3 CD, attach the powerbook via FireWire to it and start the powerbook in FireWire target disk mode, proceed with the installer, it will show you the HD of your powerbook as location for the installation.

(That's what I did because my TiBook wasn't willing to boot from the 10.3 Cd)

Panther will automagically start from the drive that has the OS X 10.3 CD when you click restart.
No need to hold down the c key or set the disk as start-up. I installed all of the Panther betas from an external FW CDRW drive.

My friend has a broken Combo drive AND a broken Firewire port. I removed his HD and put it in my OWC enclosure and used my iBook to install Panther for him. Poor guy.

I have an iBook 600 with a dead DVD-ROM drive. I was able to install 10.3, including a format and install, from an old Apple 24x CD-ROM in a firewire case. Worked fine.

The iBook is now at MCE Technologies getting a DVD/CDRW combo drive put in (cheaper than Apple's cost to simply fix the DVD-ROM).
