I have a new G4 PowerBook. All of the drivers are installed. I try to connect to the USB Epson 740 in the Print Center and it says the Driver for that printer is not installed. I restored OS X and it says the same thing. My friend has the same set up as me and hers works fine. What is the problem?

Also, I can't download it from Epson because they say it is on the OS X Disk.

Are you running Panther? If so, the 740 is NOT part of the standard install, you need to install the Epson Drivers 2 package from CD 3.

I installed Panther on my Powerbook G4, and it did install a new Epson 740 driver without me having to put in Disk 3.

Driver seems fine, I get a lot more printing options, however I can't find a way to call up the utility that shows the ink levels and lets me clean the head anymore. Seeing the ink levels was very helpful, this utility looks gone now. Anyone know how to get to it?

But what blew me away was that I forgot I was on the PB using AirPort and printed a page - it printed from across the room! It must automatically print it thru my desktop iMac connected to the 740. WOW I thought you had to have a networkable printer to do that.

I have a 740 too. I had to install the EPSON Drivers. When they are installed, Print Setup will recognize the printer under "EPSON USB"

Have had no problems with it yet.

Insert CD 3 and install the additional EPSON printer drivers. Only some of the epson drivers are installed by default. (You can get them installed during Pantehr installation by doing a customised install).

I'm having the same problem with the 740i. I've installed the extra drivers twice and still no joy. It recognizes the Epson, launches the Epson Print Utility, Says printing but the printer never prints. I've tried it on both my Dual G4 and Powerbook. This is beginning to piss me off. I never had any problems with any OSX including the public beta.

I'm going to go and try and install the CUPS stand alone drivers.

If you have installed your Epson drivers over an old installation try removing your printer in Print Center (or whatever it is now called) and "Add" it again. The new drivers may confuse Print Center.

I had to do this for my Epson 760 to work properly.

Users who have done an upgrade install of Panther, Mac OS X 10.3, can run into printing problems if they run Disk Utility's 'Repair Permissions' function. We've put together a package which repairs the print system.

The Panther upgrade install appears to forget to create a couple of new Panther users. In particular the 'lp' and 'postfix' users are not created. When permissions are repaired via Disk utility the missing users cause damage to the print system.

The attached package does not install any files. It runs an Apple provided script in order to create the needed users. Once the new users are created it deletes any existing printer queues. Next it restarts the print server, cupsd, and lastly it tries to remake the print queues for any attached and powered USB printers. The net result is that is will undo the damage done by repair permissions and you should be able to print again.

The download is a zip file. Simply open the zip file and it will create an installer package. Run the installer package to repair the print system

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! This was the 1st problem that I've had with OSX in quite a while. I'm pretty laid back when it comes to complaining, but this is just sloppy Apple. I'll be sending my feedback in 2 seconds.

Doesn't work. Double-clicking runs the utility, but the Printers list dialog is blank, though my printer is seen by the Apple driver and prints fine.

I cannot check ink levels or clean the print head as I could in 10.2.

I have a different problem, but same printer...
I have just upgraded machines, from OS 9.2 (Pismo 500), to os X.3.(12 inch G4 iBook), When I print files with the new machine, I don't get the color saturation that was there in the old machine. The printer set up dialog box is gone, I used to set the settings according to the idiot sheet that is supplied with the paper.
I'm using Photoshop 7, and an Epson Stylus Color 740i.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry I did not see this thread first, I posted this in another area earlier.
