I'm playing with some ideas for reformatting my drives when I instal panther and I have some questions.

I have 2 drives: 80gb and 160gb.

Idea 1) Partition the 80 into 2 sections. Minimum panther instal in the smaller section with utilities and retrospect (for pimping backups, maintenance, troubleshooting). Then Full panther instal in larger section with all apps. Home directory on 160 with all data.

Question 1) How big should I make the small partition?

Idea 2) Partition the 80 into 3 sections. Minimum panther, utilities on small section. Full panther alone on mid section. On large section all 3rd party apps and some data. 160gb drive for home and data.

Question 2) Can you instal apps on a partition separate from the OS? I'm guessing yes for some, but then for the more complex ones, would the installers know where to put the files, preferences etc.? Also if this could work what size for the OS partitions, how much space should I provide free for virtual memory etc.?

What do you think?
What have you guys done on your machines?
What problems do you see with these formats?

I'm a fan of single partitions. If I had your setup, I'd probably put my system on one of the hard drives, and schedule automatic backups to copy important files to the other drive for protection.

If that's not right for you, I'd put the system on the drive that's fastest, and just use the other hard drive for data.
