That's right folks. InDesign crashed. I restarted and all my sttings had disappeared. The Mac behaves like after a clean install.

Mail settings, gone.
Safari settings, gone but bizarely remembers sites from before the crash, i.e. auto fill of the URL is still functional.
Dock, empty.

All apps are still where they belong, all data is still in my user folder but the apps aren't accessing it.

Any ideas? I'm fully backed up so I could just re-install but I'm rather busy and am hoping for a less intrusive solution.

I had a similar problem like this happen. For me, I would lose my settings when my available hard disk space would was less than my ram. Do you have plenty of HD space?

have you tried reinstalling as an upgrade? it would be faster than you think, and should cause no real damage.

Looks like I'll have to do that. I started the PB as a FireWire disk from the iBook, ditched the user preferences with no joy. Which makes me think that the system prefs are buggered.

I'l do an archive and install tomorrow morning, then a proper wipe and install over the weekend.

Did you reclaim disk space with FileVault?
