Following tip is from:

Use at your own risk. Some of these video modifications have made the machine unusable.

10.3: Possibly make older video cards functional again

First off, I cannot take credit for this hint. I came across it on the indispensable xlr8yourmac.com -- it was reported by someone named David. Nevertheless, it's a great hint.

If you have a video card that worked under Jaguar but now refuses to function under Panther, try the following ... booted from Panther, open the Terminal application and type in the following (you can cut and paste if you like):
sudo nvram boot-args="romndrv=1"

Enter your admin password when requested. Reboot and your card will hopefully work. This has worked on older ATI, Formac and other cards that do not have the proper firmware. Saved me about $600 buying an SGI MultiLink adapter on eBay to get my Proformance 3 to work with an SGI 1600SW.

Um, anyone know, or care to speculate on, what this does?

I'm one of those poor Sawtooth/GeForce saps, just waiting to be able to use Panther. I saved my Jaguar install so I'm OK for now, but I'm getting impatient and might suddenly go out and buy a Radeon.

Add me to the Sawtooth/GeForce saps list! Fortunately, I kept the old ATI card around.
Which Radeon will work in the Sawtooth, with Panther?

Hmm, I seem to be ill-informed. There's an issue with Sawtooth owners with GeForce cards?

Yes, Apple supplied GeForce4 MX cards, not retail cards, will not work in a sawtooth with Panther in much the same way as they didn't upon the launch of Jag. Someone provided a hack for Jag and it remedied the problem, only to rear its head once again in Panther.
