I installed the new Windows media player 9 today. Been waiting forever for it to be released. Microsoft promises many new codec compatibilities. It even looks cool. However when I go to www.xbox.com the game trailors won't play. The media player appears but no games will load to sample the trailors. When I use Virtual PC and surf to xbox.com the game trailors load and play.

Has anyone used the new player yet? Is there a setting that needs adjustment to play all codecs? Even Apple's own QT player needs to be set to stream from their own websight. I know it's new but any help will be appreciated.

Are you pulling my leg? I certainly don't see it anywhere on Microsoft's website.

It never fails. New MS stuff, and it's screwed up. I haven't even upgraded to Panther yet, but I hope my stuff isn't broken when I do.

To get full functionality, you have to remove all previous (ie WMP 7) files from the Internet-Plug-ins folder in your Library Folder on your boot disk. Delete them and re-install WMP 9. The installer does not get rid of all old files.

Officially Microsoft says do this:

To Uninstall Windows Media Player 7 for Mac or Windows Media Player 6.3 for Mac

To uninstall previous versions of the Player:

Drag the Windows Media Player folder to the Trash.

Double-click the System folder, double-click the Preferences folder, and then drag the Windows Media Player Prefs file to the Trash.

Double-click the System folder, double-click the Extensions folder, and then drag the following files, if present, to the Trash:

Acelp.net Decoder 05.0 kbps
Acelp.net Decoder 06.5 kbps
Acelp.net Decoder 08.5 kbps
Acelp.net Decoder 16.0 kbps
Mpeg Layer-3 Audio
MPG4
VivoActive G723 Decoder

On the Special menu, click Empty Trash, and then click OK.

On the Special menu, click Restart.

I think all you have to do is delete the program from applications and all WMP files from Library>Internet Plug-ins before you install

Yes, those are OS 9 instructions. For OS X, delete the following three items:

The "Windows Media Player" folder found in "/Applications".

The "DRM Plugin.bundle" file found in "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins".

The "Windows Media Plugin" file found in "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins".

It is great to be able to access news clips from Yahoo and Reuters as well as the sports clips from ESPN. WPM scales well to full screen mode and the clarity of the feeds is good. It is a welcome addition to my computing experience of the Mac. I run programs from the open source community, MS, Adobe, Apple - whatever works and contributes.

It's just WMP 7.1 (Mac) with compatibility for the WMP9 format. It's the worst UI, and you can't use skins with it. They should have just made a QuickTime plug-in that plays windows media format... If they had just ported the Windows version it might be worth using, but it's crap that can play .wmv files.

I'm still trying to find a solution that allows me to take a QT movie and save it as a Windows format (say .wmv) that is guaranteed to play on an up-to-date Windows system. (Not mine, but other people's.)

Any leads?

(I currently use ffmpeg to convert to DivX .avi's but that still requires codec downloads on the Windows machine to work.)

Trashed those files. Installed WMP 9 for the first time. Still can't play content off xbox.com. Why did I download this?

Oh, didn't think about that. Thanks akuma-x. That makes sense since I was able to play the xbox.com videos using Virtual PC. That's too bad.

Doesn't generic MPEG-4 play in WMP?

Stuffit Expander (part of Stuffit Deluxe 8) reports error 17999 (unspecified Stuffit internal error) when I unstuff the downloaded .sitx file. The installer works fine, however.

Anyone else?

Nuked all the WMP7 pieces and installed WMP9.

Still will not play WMV3 encoded .wmv files.

Was there ever a more appropriate self-inflicted acronym than "WMP"?

Here's an example but any game on www.xbox.com has a sample video trailor and WMP9 for OSX can't play it. Here's the link.

Try whether it works on MSNBC.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I can't find instructions anywhere as to how to uninstall Windows Media Player 9. I can't even get it to run on Panther. Is there a way to get rid of this piece of crap. I can't find instructions on microsoft anywhere, the uninstall information for Windows Media Player 7 didn't work.

Strange, it works fine for me under Panther.

I went to MSNBC to try it out and it plays the video and sound just the way it should.

Except Cleaner 6 doesn't have Windows Media 9 Codecs for the Mac, nor the latest Real codecs if you run in OS X, you unfortunately need the PC only Cleaner XL to do everything. Not only that but it is easily twice as fast and 10 times more stable than Cleaner 6 is in OS X!

I deleted the app from Applications and the WMP folder from Library>Internet Plug-Ins. There may have been one other file outside the folder. Maybe check file dates with those in the folder.

Take a look at the Windows Media 9 showcase:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...tShowcase.aspx

I get 2fps on the 1920x1080 Terminator 2 clip, with a 1.6 G5...

To play the trailers on XBOX.COM, one has to do a bit of work unfortunately:

1. Navigate to the trailer you want to watch.
2. "OK" the "you don't have this plugin" dialog
3. Above the movie frame, Rt-click the link "Launch Windows Media Player" and select "Download Link to Disk".
4. Open the downloaded link in a text editor and look for the text that looks like this:

<ref href="mms://wm.microsoft.com/ms/xbox/video/medalofhonorrisingsun/mohrisingsun-001-Hi.wmv" />

5. copy the part after the href=" part up to the end quote, so the resulting selected text looks like this:

mms://wm.microsoft.com/ms/xbox/video/medalofhonorrisingsun/mohrisingsun-001-Hi.wmv

6. Copy this text, then open WMP 9.
7. Select "File", "Open URL" and then paste into the URL text box. Hit OK and enjoy.

Very slick, works like a charm. So obviously the right codes are there. Why does it not work in the browser? WTF Microsoft?
