Under 10.3 my DP533 with GF3 would crash when entering sleep. After updating to 10.3.1 I don't seem to have any problems...

Don't have a FW800 so Don't know about that. Hopefully they won't have messed up my FW400

That's good news for you and other users that use Sleep. But...

<rant>

But come on, Apple! Am I the only one who's noticed that every damn +0.0.1 update since 10.0 fixes issues with sleep. It's like sleep is a feature that's so fickle, it breaks when an OS X developer so even looks at it in a displeasing way. It's like the feature never really worked, or only worked on one developer's computer to begin with. It's like for the past 3 years the +0.0.1 update people have worked on sleep fixes as the priority, and everything else is extra. Apple seems to have a template release note for the +0.0.1 updates that starts with "Fixes issues with sleep and <insert other fixes here>" (in the detailed notes they release on the Apple Knowledge site). You can always bank on a +0.0.1 update fixing sleep issues.

Bug fixes are good, and I'm glad Apple is doing them. But I'd really like to see some more worthwhile +0.0.1 updates in the future. Something that adds little features we usually have to wait a whole year (or more) for. Like having a preference option for Mail.app's dock icon to display unread messages in all mailboxes, etc.

Well, I've never had sleep issues, with any versions, so there you go.

And if you want the preference version for Mail.app, submit it to Apple, don't tell us. I doubt Apple reads these forums regularly for YOUR suggestions.

And even if you do want it, Apple may not implement it if 3 people in the world want the feature. IMO it's the wrong way to do things... if you want to be notified of new messages (important!) then leave 'em in the inbox. Mailing list stuff isn't top priority for most people.

Never had any issues myself either. It seems to only affect people with weird configurations. I don't know.

Figured that would come up and I probably should have said I did a long time ago.

Sorting email into different boxes is essential if you are subscribed to mailing lists or run a website. Many people on these forums would also like it as an option. I was just using that feature as an example of one of the small things that Apple has consistently failed to address.

I get rather annoyed by things that repeat and bugs that aren't fully fixed, as seems to be the case with OS X and sleeping issues for the past.. 20 updates or so.

Well I have DP533 with 1Gb RAM and a BTO GF3. Hardly a weird configuration.

Poor QC is the problem.

And yes the loads of other little bugs in the GUI aren't fixed either. But at least one problem is off the list.

The problems I had, was when 'Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver' was ticked in the Security pref in the System Preferences - waking from sleep (and sometimes screen saver), would beachball.

Either the Authenticate window would not come up, sometimes for up to something like 30 seconds, or it would come up, but I couldn't type into the fields while the cursor was beachballing.

Lastly, on occasion it would work fine, but as soon as I authenticate and I'm back to the desktop etc, it would go to sleep again. Waking and Authenticating a second time would let me in.

This was on a Rev A PB 17" with a clean install of Panther.

10.3.1 appears to have fixed all cases of the beachballing on the Authenticate window when 'Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver' is ticked.

Personally, I liked the 0.0.1 update that gave us SSL in Mail...
