I was messing around with the fast user switching and logged in as the root user. I then fast switched to my account but couldn't switch back. If I log out now the list of users does not give the "Other" option. If I want to login as the root user I have to change my prefs for the login screen to be "name and password" which I don't like. What is even stranger is that if I open net info manager is give the option to enable root user, so I thought ok, I have to re enable it I authenticated and then chose to enable root user it asks for my password and after I enter it nothing happens it still shows up the same like if I didn't have root user enabled. let me know if you have a solution thanks

In Login Options, choose "Name and Password". Should do the trick.

Yes I know I can do that but I prefer the list of users and also I would like to know how to fix the issue

Go into the NetInfo manager and re-enable the root user. It was probably disabled. This'll bring your "other" back. If it's already enabled, try disabling then reaenbling.

Like I said up top net info manager shows the enable option but selecting it does nothing

when logout (or fast switch to another user), hold shift before the login window shows up, and you'll get "Other..." users.

thanks that worked. Why do you have to do that now? Like I said it used to just be there. Humm.. maybe a security thing?

Actually this is nice since regular users will not wonder what the other is.

I didn't know about the shift key. Now that I do I like the way it has been changed.

There's a little shareware program called Login Window Manager that lets you de/activate the Other... user in the list.

Here is a more complicated way to do it (use at your own risk):

Apple has posted the "real" fix for "Other" not appearing on the login screen on some Panther machines. Basically, it tells you to turn on NetInfoManager in Directory Access
