Okay it's late, I'm probably doing something really dumb, but can someone help?

How do I add a folder to Panther's Favorites folder?

I use Finder to find the folder I want to add. Then I... uh... then I...

Okay, call up Help.

Help says:

'Select the item in a Finder window and choose "Add to Favorites" from the File menu. '

Okay, I select the item, go to Finder's File menu - and...

THERE IS NO 'ADD TO FAVORITES' ITEM!

I'm missing something aren't I? Or have Apple moved things and not told Help?

Please help, my sanity is starting to fail!

Thanks,

Mike.

OK Mike...

In Panther, the Favorites folder has become a disfavored way of doing things. A search for "finder favorites" in 10.3's help revealed:

Where is my Favorites folder?

An icon for your Favorites folder is not automatically included in the Finder window's Sidebar in Mac OS X 10.3. The Sidebar itself is a good place to put your favorite items.

The Favorites folder still exists. You can find it in the Library folder of your home folder. Drag the Favorites folder to the Sidebar if you want to quickly open your Favorites folder from the desktop.
So if you want, add it to your sidebar, or add it to your dock, but generally, it's not used for much anymore.

[edit]

Oh, so specifically, to add something to your Favorites folder, you can either drag the item to your favorites folder (which will move the actual item itself) or you can make an alias of the item, and drag that to your favorites folder.

The slickest way to do the alias route, it to add the favorites folder to your sidebar, and then to command-option drag the item you want to add to your favorites folder to the favorites folder in your sidebar.

Ah is that the reason? Strange that part of Help is completely misleading then. Sounds like another thing Apple will need to fix.

Thanks for confirming I'm not entirely mad!

Just switched to Panther and losing favorites from the Go menu is just plain dumb. I've added it to the sidebar but this is a step backwards imo.

Your Favorites go into the Finder sidebar now...works fine by me...a lot easier than reaching for a menu

I agree I always forget the favorites menu is there. I used to put them in the Dock. Still do, but I add them to the sidecar in the Finder as well. I seem to be using the Finder a lot more now. It's finally doing its job.

O.K., basic question from one who has not had much time to "play" with Panther. How do I put something in the sidebar? Just drag as I do to the dock? Or do I need to create an alias first and drag that to the sidebar? Thanks in advance!

Just drag it to the sidebar ... it becomes an alias automatically (i.e. there really isn't anything but aliases in the side bar... no "real" items reside there). So, yes, its like the dock.

On a side note, if you want to add your favorites to the sidebar, browse to User/Library/Favorites and drag it over. It looks like a normal folder in the finder, but it will turn into the familiar "favorites heart" once you put it in the sidebar.

I don't mind them toning-down the Favourites because that's what the sidebar is now.

But - I do find it annoying that Apple took away the Command-Shift-F Keyboard shortcut - that was very useful.
